So New York seems to just keep getting pounded with storm after storm this winter. Last night, New York received another foot of new snow, adding to the nightmares it has already seen this season. For all of you automobile owners out there, this can be a huge pain. We all know the East coast makes a serious effort to salt all the roads, so that drivers can get around somewhat safely. And while we do appreciate this, the salt can be so damaging to our vehicles. Our paint jobs can be destroyed and the underside’s of our cars can start to corrode over time.
Once the salt starts to hit the metal on the underside of your car, it already begins the process of corroding it. This can allow water to get in and speed up the process of rusting body panels, frames and other portions of the undercarriage. A helpful idea to keep your paint job safe, is to put wax on the car before winter. As for the undercarriage, the important thing is to keep the car clean. So whenever you get home from driving out on the salt-lined roads, wash the car off as quick as you can. And do not just clean the visible parts of your vehicle. Make sure you also spray off the areas underneath and the wheel wells. Sometimes the salt is mixed with sand and other substances to prolong its use, but this is also dangerous for your car as it can cause the paint to chip.
